Mayweather vs Cotto: 2nd Best Option?

Mayweather vs Pacquiao has become one of the most talked about, yet ridiculed rivalries in sports today with the on going back and forth posturing and demands that seems to be pushing both fighters away more than making the fight Boxing fans have been waiting for. With talks of Pacquiao not fighting until June and Mayweather sticking to his guns for a May 5th fight, one guy is sitting back in quite possibly the best position he’s been in his whole career, and that is Miguel Cotto. Fresh off his victory over Antonio Margarito, the question remained on whether Cotto would resign with his longtime promoter Top Rank. Names such as Chavez Jr and a Pacquiao rematch were supposed to be incentives for him resigning. Instead, he’s chosen to be his own promoter and have the ability to work outside of Top Rank who have more times than not held in house fights.

For Floyd Mayweather, substitute names such as Robert Guerrero and Saul Alvarez have been at the forefront, but with a slight hint to a possible showdown with a now free agent Miguel Cotto, who in comparison to both guys brings bigger dollar signs, which Floyd loves more than anything.

The announcement that WBA super welterweight king Miguel Cotto and WBC welterweight monarch Floyd Mayweather Jr. will meet on May 5 could occur in the next few days. Cotto, now a free agent, had several meetings with long time promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank, but no agreement was reached. The Sport Press learned that Golden Boy Promotions, who does business with Mayweather Jr., made a juicy offer to Cotto immediately after efforts failed to make a bout between the ‘Pretty Boy’ and Manny Pacquiao. In fact, José Sulaimán, president of the WBC, announced in Mexico that Mayweather Jr and Pacquiao will fight in November in Qatar, United Arab Emirates, therefore the date of May 5 is free for Mayweather Jr to face Cotto.

Boxing fans will remember also that both Mayweather and Cotto were once on a path to facing one another as the top 2 Welterweights in the sport prior to Cotto’s loss to Margarito. Though by some it may be a fight too late in the making, it’s those fights that sometimes tell us more about where a fighter truly is in their career. The next few days shall be very interesting.

Floyd Mayweather Talks Victor Ortiz ; Open to Fighting Pacquiao

Well it seems as if Floyd NOW is open to fighting Pacquiao. During the recent press conference in NYC promoting his upcoming fight with young champion Victor Ortiz, it was inevitable that Floyd would be hounded with Pacquiao questions. His interview with Brian Kenny doesn’t seize those questions.
